Postpone Womens AFCON – Black Queens Head coach Mercy Tagoe

Ghana’s Black Queens head coach, Mercy Quarcoo-Tagoe, has called for the immediate postponement of this year’s Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) to be staged in the Republic of Congo.

According to her, numerous countries around the world are still yet to recover from the full effects of the deadly coronavirus, which has decimated lives all around the world and brought lots of activities to major halt hence the need to truncate the Afcon Women’s tournament and reschedule it to a later date.

“Looking at how the world has suffered from the pandemic it will be difficult to hold the AWCON. My girls are psychologically shaken by the pandemic and the situation keeps getting worse”

“If we can wait and have the tournament next year to protect the players from contracting the virus, I am for that.”she told Happy FM.

Meanwhile CAF has postponed major competitions around on the continent in efforts to help mitigate the widespread of the coronavirus, whiles government’s are also putting in measures to ease earlier restrictions.

The Total  African Women’s Championship is organized every two years for female footballers all around African.

A hattrick from Nigerian forward Asisat Oshoala helped the Nigerian Super Falcons thrash Equatorial Guinea 6-0 to progress to the semis of the AWCON.

After a shaky start to the tournament in a 1-0 loss to South Africa, the Super Falcons sought to amend things with a resounding 4-0 victory over Zambia in the second game to ensure things were still in their hands to go through to the next round.

They ensured qualification on Saturday afternoon with a demolition of Equatorial Guinea who has now conceded 18 goals in 3 matches.

Francisca Ordega opened the scoring within 10 minute slotting the ball under the hapless Equatorial Guinean goalkeeper. Asisat Oshoala who had a bad game against Zambia made amends with two quick fire goals in the 13th minute and the 23rd minutes, ending the match as a contest at this point.

Oshoala completed her hattrick in the 33rd minute with a thumping header to send Nigerian fans in the stands into delirium.

The second half started in similar fashion as Nigeria added a 5th goal two minutes later from Desire Oparanozie. Rita Chikwelu added the sixth and final goal to add more woes to Equatorial Guinea’s misery. She was thought to be offside and had only the keeper to beat; she made no mistake.

The Black Queens coach Bashir Hayford has admitted that his side have a goal scoring problem after they failed to score more than a goal once again despite a flurry of chances.

He was speaking after the Queens were defeated in their second game 2-1 by Mali, leaving their qualification to the next round hanging by a thread.

AWCON: “Mali Will Be Tough But We Are Hopeful Of Victory”- Priscilla Okyere

“Yes we have a goal scoring problem”, he said. He also said that prior to the tournament, their main two striker suffered knocks that ruled them out of the tournament. “Jane and captain Elizabeth Addo were the only two strikers left. Jane is the only potent striker among the two but she has not got power. But that is not her fault. We all know she had a problem earlier on after being hospitalized. We initially ruled her out and now she up and we have to encourage her.”

“Elizabeth Addo is also not a potent striker and she likes to strike behind the striker. Yes we have a problem with scoring. We create so many chances but fail to score and that is not the problem of the coach. We are however working on them” he added

The Black Queens play Cameroon on Friday and will have to beat them and hope Algeria draw or beat Mali to ensure their qualification to the next round.

Black Queens lost their first game in the AWCON to Mali on Tuesday afternoon. A brace from Malian striker Bassira Toure was enough to sink the Queens to a defeat.

The Queens were hoping to follow up their opening day win against Algeria with another that would ensure their qualification to the next round But it wasn’t meant to be.

The Malians took the lead in the 25th minute from the penalty spot. Striker Basira Toure stepped up and made no mistake.

AWCON: “Mali Will Be Tough But We Are Hopeful Of Victory”- Priscilla Okyere

Ghana fought hard to get into the game but some poor finishing and controversial refereeing decisions hindered them.

They went into the break a goal down.
Second half the Queens took charge and controlled the game.. Impressive saves from the Malian Keeper denied them on numerous occasions But they eventually had their equalizer in the 60 minute when Elizabeth Addo was brought down after only just coming on as a substitute for Priscilla Okyere minutes ago. She took the resulting penalty herself and slotted it home to bring Ghana back into the game.

We Are Prepared To Host And Win AWCON – Coach Bashir Hayford

Ghana were in the ascendancy and were looking to go for the kill but it wasn’t to be when Malian captain grabbed her brace and eventual winner for Mali in the 75 minute. The Ghanaian goalkeeper Mantey mistimed a clearance from a Malian free-kick and the ball dropped for striker Toure who made sure it hit the back of the net.

The results leaves 3 teams in the group with 3 points with Algeria and Cameroon set to play later in the evening. It’s an open group but Ghana cannot afford to drop points in the final game against Cameroon if they want to qualify for the next round.
