Shafiu Mumuni and two other Black Stars B players named in 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations Best XI

Three Black Stars B players made it to the 2019 West African Football Union Cup of Nations Team of the tournament.




Shafiu Mumuni, Joseph Esso and Fatawu Mohammed were the Ghanaian players that made it to the Team of the tournament list after the Black Stars B finished second in the tournament.

Joseph Esso made the list after contributing two goals and some impressive displays in the tournament.

Shafiu Mumuni was the highest goalscorer in the competition with four goals and was definitely going to make the list.

Fatawu Mohammed earned his spot through several solid defensively display in the competition.

Black Stars B fail to qualify for CHAN after 0-0 draw against Burkina Faso

Ghana Black Stars B team have failed to qualify for the 2020 CHAN tournament after failing to secure a win away from home against Burkina Faso.




Burkina Faso held the Black Stars B team to a 0-0 draw on Sunday preventing them from qualifying for the tournament.

Ghana lost 1-0 at home a few weeks ago and have failed to overturn the results in the second leg.

Since losing the 2014 finals in South Africa, Ghana have now failed to qualify for the last two tournaments played in Rwanda (2016) and Morocco (2018).

WAFU Cup2019 : We gave our best in the competition – Joseph Esso

Black Stars B and Hearts of Oak striker Joseph Esso insists that the entire team gave their very best in the 2019 West African Football Union Cup.




Ghana failed to retain the WAFU Cup after losing to 2019 host nation Senegal 3-1 on Penalties.

Despite the disappointment of failing to defend the title, Esso was happy with the experience from his first tournament and stated that the team gave their best.

“As an upcoming player, getting to play in my first international tournament says a lot. It will improve me and it will enhance my career going forward,” he told ESPN Africa.

“I look at the team and I can say that we gave off our best during the competition.”

The Black Stars B arrived in Ghana last night and will head to camp as they prepare for the second leg of the CHAN qualifiers against Burkina Faso.

WAFU 2019: Shafiu Mumuni’s hat trick sends Ghana to the finals

WAFU defending champions Ghana are through to the finals of the 2019 edition after beating Ivory Coast 3-1, thanks to a Shafiu Mumuni hat trick.




Ghana opened the scoring through Shafiu Mumuni who made the most of a scrappy goalmouth scramble to give his team in the lead in the 30th minute of the game.

Shafiu Mumuni added his second in the first minute into the second with a great finish to extend the lead for his side.

The Black Stars B captain completed his hat trick in the 49th minute, becoming the first player to achieve this feat in the history of the WAFU competition.

Ivory Coast pulled one back through Doumbia who beat the goalkeeper with a well-taken free-kick.

Ghana are in the finals of the WAFU 2019 and will face either Senegal or Mali in the final game of the tournament.

Ghana Black Stars B are through to the semifinals of the WAFU 2019 tournament after defeating Burkina Faso 5-4 on penalties.


Ilina Teindrebeogo 3rd minute strike was canceled by Shafiu Mumuni’s 39th-minute strike. Nothing could separate both teams at the end of 90 minutes and the game went to penalties where the defending champions secured a 5-4 victory.

Gambia had to opportunity to restore parity when the referee awarded them a penalty but Modou Cham missed the opportunity to level the scoreline.
