Ghana PL: Karela United held by Great Olympics

Karela United extend their unbeaten run to seven games without defeat after settling for a 1-1 draw against Great Olympics on Friday afternoon.

Diawisie Taylor scored early in the first half to give the home side the lead before Samuel Abbey scored just before the break to level things at the CAM Park.

Great Olympics are third and now two points behind Kotoko and Hearts of Oak in the league table, while Karela sits at the fourth position.

Diawisie Taylor’s goal against Great Olympics means he has now scored 16 goals in the Ghana Premier League this season, five more than any other player.

Chairman Agbogah recounts one year as VRFA Chairman

It’s been well over a year and some months since Daniel Agbogah succeeded Francis Dogbatse as Chairman of the Volta Regional Football Association.

The young, dynamic football administrator, who has been an active participant of the game and its development having held several portfolios in the game, has shared some thoughts on his mandate as Chairman of the Volta Region.

When queried on his thoughts on his one-year mandate amongst other things, he had this to say “Well for me, I look at football beyond the pitch, which is another department of the game, and by this, you need to play with utmost confidence.

“The regional association has in many ways organized capacity building for coaches, administrators, secretariat to enable the standard of football to be raised”.

Having served as chairman of municipal football previously, he intimated a new initiative, which is geared towards unearthing talents at the grassroots,

“We have implemented the “catch them young program” in some of the districts and so far we are on course, the participation has been very resounding, hopefully, it will be organized at different areas in the region “

Ghana played out a pulsating 1-1 draw with Rainbow nation, South Africa in the penultimate game of group C match in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the FNB Stadium then two days later; they crowned it off with a 3-1 victory over Sao Tome and Principe at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In the end, Ghana will be pleased with its ninth consecutive qualification to the continent’s biggest football tournament together with Sudan, who did everything humanly possible to secure the second slot ahead of South Africa.

Ghana may have qualified for next year’s tournament but they are a few things that need ratifications if the country wants to end its long wait for a major continental trophy.

The Ghana Football Association will have to give CK Akonnor the freehand to operate and make salient decisions for the overall welfare of the assembled team at his disposal. In the lead up to this recent doubleheader against South Africa, Sao Tome, and Principe, the head coach is on record to have suggested that, there were some players, he didn’t name in the squad but found them on the final list that was released days before the penultimate and ultimate round of games in the AFCON qualifiers.

This development will not sit well with any head coach, who cannot freely express himself in the portfolio; he has been assigned.

On the part of the FA efforts, they can fully support the coach in diverse ways to fully realize his set targets and objectives which will rub well on their administration.

The technical team has an arduous task to select the very best of players all around the globe to represent the country. That means that, they have to extensively travel, scout across the length, breadth of the country, and beyond to hand opportunities to players passionate, determined about the course and fit to play for the nation.

CK will have to stamp his authority on the team; it’s been over a year since he was appointed head coach and anytime the team plays, there’s no clear pattern or identity you could label them with.

In the doubleheader, that was played, they could barely string multiple passes together, some argued, it’s because a host of first-team players failed to turn up (Ayew brothers, Partey) and others but the question is, if something happens to the aforementioned, it spells doom for Akonnor.

That’s where, I will suggest that the team needs to have a strong bench to fall back on in times of need, as well as select the best of players plying their trade in the Ghana Premier League which will encourage others to also give off their best with an idea of national team call-up and a foreign contract to reward their efforts.

In between now and next year’s tournament, there are a lot of things that need to be placed on the right track in order to facilitate the team to win its fifth trophy, which has long eluded it for over three decades.

Institute a base salary for GPL players – Boakye Yiadom club Administrators

Ghana Blackstars Richmond Boakye-Yiadom has emotionally appealed to administrators and other key stakeholders of Ghana football to institute a base salary that will help ameliorate the financial strain imposed on players who ply their trade in the domestic league.

According to the former Red Star Belgrade forward, most of the local lads are not reaping the full dividends of the game despite the wholesome amounts of hard work invested.

“I don’t mean to offend any team owner with what I am about to say but I think if a player wakes up every day to train, fight and wants to do his best to take a club to the highest level we all can help that person”.

“Ghana is one of the countries capable of developing players to the highest level but excuse my language if a player is receiving GHC 500 or 1000 and that person has rent to pay and has a girlfriend or wife with kids it’s a difficult situation to combine.

“If there can be sponsors that can help to introduce a base salary to cushion them to carry on their job without stressing the Ghanaian league will be one of the best,” he opined on The Tracker on Citi Tv.

The former Red Star Belgrade forward netted over 60 goals in over 100 appearances during his four-year stay with the club which he recently left following the expiration of his contract in December 2020.

He won two Serbian league titles with the club and played in Europe’s biggest club competition the UEFA Champions League.

Ghana PL Match Preview and Prediction: Legon Cities vs Medeama

There will lots of matches for fans to look forward to this weekend, the Accra Sports Stadium will be home to one of the finest clashes fixtures in round two of the ongoing Ghana Premier League.

Both clubs signed lots of players to augment their squad ahead of the new season. The nouveau-riche side have in their ranks, Asamoah Gyan, who is racing against time to be fit for this duel after missing the previous two. The Mauve and Yellows on the other hand have had somewhat of a slow start after been highly tipped by pundits to win this seasons league.

Legon Cities are still winless in their opening two games of the ongoing league session, drawing one, losing one, which culminated in the sacking of their head coach, Goran Barjatarevic after his outfit was heavily battered by Great Olympics. New coach Bashir Hayford will be looking to improve his side and get a result against Medeama.

This weekend, they faceoff with a wounded premier league hopeful, Medeama SC, who narrowly lost to Dreams FC at the Dawu Park.

Both clubs come into this fixture having met on eight different occasions in the last five years, the home side the dominant of the two, winning four, Medeama three, and a draw to cap of their eight league clashes.

Prediction: Legon Cities 1–2 Medeama SC
