Antoine Semenyo brought his Bournemouth chapter to a close in dramatic fashion, scoring deep into stoppage time to seal a thrilling 3–2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Vitality Stadium.

The Ghanaian winger, featuring for the 110th time for the Cherries and widely expected to be making his final appearance before completing a move to Manchester City, delivered the decisive moment in the 95th minute. Set up by David Brooks, Semenyo cut inside and rifled a right-footed effort into the far corner to secure all three points.

Bournemouth had earlier looked set to be denied victory after João Palhinha hauled Tottenham level in the 78th minute with a spectacular bicycle kick. With momentum shifting late on, it took a moment of individual quality from Semenyo to swing the contest back in the hosts’ favour.

The 26-year-old’s late intervention capped a memorable final outing and underlined the impact he has made during his time at the club. His departure comes after a productive campaign in which he registered 10 goals and three assists in 20 appearances.

Semenyo leaves Bournemouth having delivered one final decisive contribution, closing his spell at the club on a powerful note.

The Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco delivered drama, dominance, and defining moments as Africa’s finest nations booked their places in the quarter-finals, setting up a mouth-watering last-eight stage.

Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire underlined their credentials with an emphatic 3–0 victory over Burkina Faso in Marrakech. Amad Diallo continued his impressive form, scoring once and providing an assist as the Ivorians eased through with authority. Their reward is a blockbuster quarter-final clash against Egypt, seven-time champions, in Agadir, a repeat of the iconic 2006 final.

Egypt secured their place after a hard-fought 3–1 extra-time win over Benin, with Yasser Ibrahim’s towering header and a Mohamed Salah breakaway goal proving decisive in a tense encounter.

Algeria also needed late drama to advance, edging past the Democratic Republic of Congo 1–0 thanks to a 119th-minute strike from substitute Adil Boulbina in Rabat. The victory sets up a heavyweight quarter-final showdown with Nigeria, who cruised through the round of 16 with a commanding 4–0 win over Mozambique, barely breaking sweat.

Hosts Morocco delighted home fans as a solitary strike from Brahim Díaz secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Tanzania, sending the Atlas Lions into the quarter-finals. Díaz etched his name into AFCON history by becoming the first Moroccan player to score in four consecutive tournament matches. Morocco will now face Cameroon, who overcame South Africa 2–1 to keep their title hopes alive.

In an all-West African battle, Senegal fought back from behind to defeat Sudan 3–1, while Mali, reduced to ten men, showed remarkable resilience to edge Tunisia 3–2 on penalties after a 1–1 draw. The results set up an enticing Senegal-Mali quarter-final clash, promising intensity and regional pride.

With the Round of 16 concluded, the quarter-finals now bring together continental giants and fierce rivals, as the race for the AFCON 2025 crown intensifies across Morocco.

Ghanaian duo Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku were the heroes for Leicester City on Monday night, combining to secure a hard-fought 2–1 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the English Championship.

Playing at the King Power Stadium, Ayew gave the Foxes an early advantage in the 18th minute, reacting quickest to a cut-back from Jordan James and finishing with determination. West Brom responded before the break, as Karlan Grant calmly found the net in the 34th minute to restore parity.

Just when the contest seemed headed for a draw, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku delivered the decisive moment deep into injury time. The winger calmly converted after being set up by Stephy Mavididi, sealing all three points for Leicester City.

Ayew’s strike takes his 2026 tally to one goal and one assist, while Fatawu’s goal is his first of the year and his fifth of the 2025/26 Championship season.

Leicester City currently sit 12th on the Championship table with 37 points.

The long unbeaten runs of Jonina Ladies and Ampem Darkoa Ladies came to an end on Matchday 8 of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League, as surprises unfolded across both the Southern and Northern Zones.

In the Southern Zone, Jonina Ladies suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 1–0 to Army Ladies at the Teshie Mats Park. The decisive moment came in the 70th minute, when Linda Achiaa struck to hand Army Ladies a crucial victory and end Jonina’s impressive run. Despite the loss, Jonina Ladies remain top of the Southern Zone standings, level on 19 points with Army Ladies but ahead on goal difference.

Elsewhere in the Northern Zone, champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies were beaten 2–1 by Dreamz Ladies at the Bantama AstroTurf, also ending their unbeaten start to the campaign. Ajegipina Zakaria, the league’s leading scorer, opened the scoring in the 16th minute to extend her tally to 10 goals for the season. However, Dreamz Ladies mounted a swift comeback, scoring in the 24th and 32nd minutes to secure the win before halftime.

Despite the setback, Ampem Darkoa Ladies remain firmly at the summit of the Northern Zone with 19 points, maintaining a strong lead over second-placed Royal Fosu Ladies, who now have 14 points following a 1–1 draw with Kumasi Sports Academy on the same matchday.

In another key development, the race for the Golden Glove intensified after Hasaacas Ladies played out a goalless draw with Police Ladies. The result saw Grace Buoadu Banwaa of Hasaacas register her sixth clean sheet of the season, drawing level with Osman Huzeimah of Jonina Ladies at the top of the clean-sheet chart.

Matchday 8 has therefore delivered a major shift in momentum across the Women’s Premier League, ending unbeaten streaks while keeping both Jonina Ladies and Ampem Darkoa Ladies in control of their respective zones as the title race continues to heat up.

The stage is set for an exciting knockout phase at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, as the Round of 16 fixtures have been officially confirmed, following the conclusion of an action-packed group stage across all six groups.

At the end of the group phase, the top two teams from each of the six groups booked automatic qualification to the Round of 16, with the final four slots decided by the best third-placed teams, in line with the tournament format introduced since AFCON expanded to 24 teams.

Hosts Morocco finished top of Group A with seven points, while Mali progressed as runners-up. Although Comoros finished third in the group, their two points and inferior overall ranking meant they narrowly missed out on qualification, underlining how tight the margins were across the groups.

In Group B, seven-time champions Egypt led the standings ahead of South Africa, while Angola, despite finishing third, did not accumulate enough points to rank among the best four third-placed sides. Zimbabwe exited the competition after finishing bottom of the group.

Group C saw Nigeria deliver one of the most dominant group-stage performances in recent AFCON history, winning all three matches to finish with a perfect nine points. Tunisia followed in second place, while Tanzania finished third and Uganda ended their campaign in fourth position. Despite having the same number of points as other third-placed teams elsewhere, Tanzania advanced on the goals scored tie-breaker, a decisive factor that ultimately kept their AFCON dream alive.

In Group D, Senegal and DR Congo both ended with seven points, with Senegal topping the group on goal difference. Benin, who finished third, secured one of the four best third-placed slots thanks to their superior overall record, while Botswana exited the tournament without a point.

Group E was dominated by Algeria, who won all three matches to underline their status as former champions. Burkina Faso followed in second place, while Sudan, finishing third, accumulated enough points to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

In Group F, defending champions Côte d’Ivoire and five-time winners Cameroon both finished on seven points to advance automatically, while Mozambique, despite finishing third, completed the list of best third-placed teams to qualify for the Round of 16.

The Round of 16 action begins on January 3, with Senegal facing Sudan and Mali taking on Tunisia. On January 4, hosts Morocco meet Tanzania, while South Africa clash with Cameroon. The knockout matches continue on January 5, as Egypt face Benin and Nigeria square off against Mozambique, before the final Round of 16 fixtures on January 6, which see Algeria battle DR Congo and Côte d’Ivoire take on Burkina Faso.

With the group stage now behind them, the tournament moves into its most unforgiving phase, where every mistake could be decisive. As Morocco provides the stage for the knockout rounds, past champions, continental heavyweights, and ambitious challengers will all be chasing a place in the quarterfinals and a step closer to African football’s ultimate prize.

Eredivisie, NAC has added André Ayew (36), a new striker to its squad. The experienced French-Ghanaian striker has signed a contract until the end of the current season, with a club option for another season in Breda.

According to the club, Ayew has passed up several (lucrative) opportunities in recent months, having been without a club since last summer. He played his last competitive matches at Le Havre in May 2025. In the meantime, Ayew has maintained his fitness at Nania FC, owned by his father and African football legend Abédi Pelé.

The Ghanaian international has over 120 caps (and 24 goals for his country), has a rich record. Ayew made his mark, particularly at Olympique de Marseille, Swansea City, and West Ham United. He has almost 600 official appearances in the Champions League, Ligue 1, Ligue 2, Premier League, Championship, and the Turkish Super Lig, scoring over 160 goals in those competitions.

Speaking about his transfer to Breda Ayew said: “I’m someone who really enjoys challenges, both personally and as part of a team. I find that here at NAC. I want to do everything I can to help the club and my teammates. We’re in a situation where staying in the Eredivisie is the only thing that matters. The mental aspect is perhaps the most important thing in this situation. Together with our supporters, we must fight this battle head-on in the second half of the season.”

Technical Director Peter Maas explains Ayew’s arrival. “André is eager to help NAC in their fight for survival. That’s become very clear from our conversations. We’re currently in a difficult position with NAC. Ayew has also faced some tough times in his career. He’s a true sportsman who takes good care of himself. We believe that with his experience and specific qualities, he can be of value to NAC right now.”

Ayew joins head coach Carl Hoefkens’ squad immediately. NAC will resume training on Friday, January 2nd, at the BO Infra Training Complex in Zundert.

The goal came just a week after Cabfix Ladies had scored against Jonina in the Women’s FA Cup Round of 32, ending their perfect defensive record across all competitions.

Jonina had taken the lead in the 39th minute through captain Agnes Yeboah, whose strike took her tally to five league goals this season. The skipper was once again influential, earning the NASCO Most Valuable Player award for a second consecutive matchday, having also claimed the honour on Matchday Six.
