Kwesi Nyantakyi’s life ban reduced to twelve years

It wasn’t until mid-year June 2018 that Anas’ exposé brought the football circles to it’s knees following a massive undercover of deep-seated corruption practices in the game.

This revelation, however, had heads rolling on different sides of the table, four months after the exposé, one of the notable names on the lips and minds of the masses was the former GFA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, who was pictured taking $65,000 (£48,000) from an undercover reporter as many felt he had reached a cult figure status.

Mr. Nyantakyi was been banned for life from all football-related activities by FIFA in October 2018.

According to reports from Kumasi-based, Nhyira FM Sports, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has reduced Kwesi Nyantakyi’s life ban to 12 years.

The ban has been reduced following a successful appeal by the former Ghana Football Association (GFA) boss.

Prior to his ban, he served as GFA President for 13 years, WAFU president, vice-president of CAF, and a member of the FIFA Council.

Aside from the ban, he was fined 500,000 Swiss francs (£390,000).

Ghana FA begin process for implementation of VAR

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), has begun the process of implementing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), technology in domestic competitions.

The video assistant referee, is an assistant referee in association football who intervenes in decisions made by the referee and requests for an on field review with the use of video footage and headset for communication.

VAR was first written into the laws of the game by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) in 2018, following extensive trailing in a number of major competitions.

“VAR is coming to Ghana, but there are a lot of work that we need to do to ensure that VAR comes to this country., GFA Referees Manager, Alex Kotey said in an interview with GFA News.

“FIFA is saying that, by the next 3 years, VAR must go to all member associations and so member associations must begin to accept this concept and let it become part of our football.

“So, in the project planning, there are so many requirements that FIFA will demand from us which is in line with the club licensing regulations and so there’s nothing to fear. After the project planning, there’s another requirement where you have to engage the various stakeholders, like referees who are the main actors of this program.

“The VAR is in three models, that’s, VAR in a structure, VAR in a container and VAR in a mobile van. For me, I’ll be bias and go for the van, and that is because it is movable, so, that anywhere StarTimes is covering a match, the VAR will be there to make their work very simple.

“FIFA is ready to support this course and the only thing that member associations need to do is to show commitment and the willingness to accept the VAR into our football.

“When that is done, FIFA and CAF will give us all the necessary support that we need to actualize the project. Though we are going to bring VAR, we need to work on our referees because VAR is an aide to officiating and so referees should not be dependent on the VAR.

“We want everyone to catch the euphoria that VAR will soon come to Ghana with the support of the Ghana Football Association, CAF and FIFA” Referees Manager Alex Kotey ended

Currently, only a few African countries, namely, Morocco, South Africa and Egypt use VAR in their domestic competitions.

Congress approves Exco allowances and bonuses

On September 1, Congress approved a new allowance structure for officials of the Ghana Football Association at the meeting held at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence, Prampram.

The Ad-hoc Compensation Committee was formed with the mandate of developing a new allowances and bonuses structure for executives of the country’s top hierarchy, GFA.

Based on a thorough job and recommendations that was presented by the Ad-hoc Compensation Committee of the association, Congress however accepted and passed for the allowances and bonuses structure to take effect.

Breakdown of Allowances

The President, Kurt Okraku will duly receive a  monthly allowance of GHS 12,000, Vice President, Mark Addo will take home a cool  GHS 7,000 whiles the Executive Council members will be paid GHS 4000 as allowances.

Meeting Allowances

With regards to meeting allowance, the President will take home GHS 1600, his vice will pocket GHS 1400 as meeting allowance with the Executive Council members also receiving GHS 1300.

These new changes to the allowances and bonuses structure have since been met with lots of backlash from the public spectacle on electronic media, social media as well as other mediums, with many claiming that the Kurt led administration that preached on the mantra of “”bringing back the love” are taking exorbitant allowances that will have dire implications on the public purse of the country.

It remains to be seen if this new administration will do things differently from what the prior administration under the leadership of Kwesi Nyatakyi were doing.

GFA secures land to construct AstroTurf at Bolgatanga

President of the Ghana Football Association Kurt E.S Okraku has inspected a 6.5-acre land secured by the federation at Wintogo, Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region for the construction of an AstroTurf.

Full GFA Statement:

The land, which was donated by Mr. Ababu Afelibik, headmaster of the Bolgatanga Senior High School, has been duly registered in the name of the Ghana Football Association.

The GFA, with the help of the Upper East Regional Football Association, the Chiefs, elders and the Community on Wednesday, August 05, 2020, unveiled the signpost for the project at a brief ceremony.

This follows the decision of the Executive Council to use part of the project funds from the FIFA Forward 1.0 programme for the construction of two Astro Turfs – one at Prampram and the other at Bolgatanga.

Executive Council members Nana Sarfo Oduro and Alhaji Salifu Zida Shaibu, who doubles as Chairman of the Upper East Regional Football Association, accompanied the GFA President. Also, in attendance were Executive Council members of the Regional and District Football Association for Upper East.

The construction of this AstroTurf will come as a relief to the people of Bolgatanga who have been without a quality playing field for years.

The pitch, when completed, will serve the people of Bolgatanga and its environs.

The FIFA Forward 1.0 fund was one of the key issues that President Kurt Simeon Okraku discussed with FIFA President Gianni Infantino during his visit to the Home of Football, Switzerland in December 2019. Since the visit, the GFA has been working with the FIFA Development officers who visited Ghana in March 2020.

Other projects earmarked under FIFA Forward 1.0 will be announced in due course.
