FEATURED: Ghana PL Poor Refereeing Intentional?

Football is undoubtedly the beloved sport of Ghanaians, who will do everything within their realms to watch their clubs from time to time.

During the C0VID-19 period, fans were barred from watching their clubs not to talk of cheering them on to victory at the end of the day.

Over the years, Ghanaian Referees have become an integral part of the football circle; this is to say that, without the “men in black” steering the affairs on the field, clubs cannot play with a valid winner declared on the day.

The Ghana Premier League 2020-21 campaign has reached a very crucial point of the season, with some clubs (Hearts, Kotoko, Aduana, Medeama) gunning to increase their trophy haul, whiles others(Inter Allies, Liberty, King Faisal, Legon Cities) are looking to escape the dungeons of relegation.

This is the very period, Ghanaian referees have endlessly wailed to the Ghana Football Association to at least settle some of their long-standing arrears from the first round of the Ghana Premier League 2020-21 season to help fuel their expenses.

As to whether the GFA will channel efforts in softening the financial conundrum that the men in black are facing remains unknown, there have been growing reports of “bad” officiating from the referees but it is unclear if these are geared towards expressing their displeasure to the top hierarchy or unduly aiding some clubs in achieving their set goals by the end of the season.

The GFA has a responsibility in ensuring that Ghanaian referees are properly cared for in order for them to dutifully discharge their duties to the very best of their expertise, whiles the latter also has the mandate towards clubs, fans, stakeholders, sponsors to ensure they act accordingly to the laws that repose confidence in them when they take to the pitch on any day in the exercise of their duties.

The betterment of Ghana Football is what we all aspire for, it’s a gradual process, hopefully, we will get there, if everyone executes their duties very well.

Ghana FA revokes three GPL clubs licenses

The Club Licensing Board of the Ghana Football Association, have revoked the licenses of three Ghana Premier League clubs in the country.

This decision was borne out of an inspection conducted by club licensing board on various league clubs in the country.

The affected clubs are Liberty Professionals, Berekum Chelsea, and Elmina Sharks, who use the Carl Reindorf Park, Golden City park, and Ndoum Sports Stadium respectively for their home duels.

The aforementioned clubs will have to resort to other venues they deem appropriate for the upcoming home fixtures in the ongoing league.

However, three clubs namely Dreams FC, Eleven Wonders, King Faisal, and Bechem United would have to heed to the recommendations of the board before the resumption of the second round or face further sanctions.

Asante Kotoko hit with Transfer ban and fined GH¢207,800

Asante Kotoko have been banned from the second transfer window of the 2020/21 season after the local giants were found guilty of abusive breach of contracts involving four players, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced Monday.

The second registration window for the ongoing season is scheduled to open between February 16 and March 18, 2021, but the Porcupine Warriors will not be able to register any new players during the period.

This is due to a ruling by the Players’ Status Committee (PSC) of the GFA on four cases concerning the club and four of its former players – Matthew Kelvin Andoh, Stephen Tetteh Ayiku, Evans Owusu and Abass Mohammed – who, in separate petitions, reported the club for unilateral termination of their contracts.

The players sought for the PSC to rule on the payment of their outstanding salaries and signing-on fees with the GFA body granting them a combined compensation of GH¢197,800 to be paid by Kotoko within 14 days.

Not only that, Kotoko are in further hot waters as the GFA has decided to sanction the club due to the repeated abusive breach of contract in the four cases.

Invoking Article 16(4) of the GFA RSDTP, Kotoko have been banned from registering any new player(s) domestically for one registration period and fined GH¢10,000 for the numerous instances of abusive breach.

In the event Kotoko fails to meet the 14-day deadline for the payment of the GH¢197,800 compensation to the quartet and the GH¢10,000 fine to the GFA, the matter shall be forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee to consider for further sanctions – points deduction.

Ethics Committee sanctions Referee Daniel Kwame Nsiah

The GFA Ethics Committee at its meeting held on November 19, 2020 found Daniel Kwame Nsiah, a Referee and District Technical Instructor, guilty of having breached Article 25 of the GFA Code of Ethics (Abuse of position) of the GFA Code of Ethics (2019).

The Committee commenced investigations into Mr. Daniel Kwame Nsiah’s conduct after receiving GFA’s Integrity Report which accused Mr. Nsiah of arranging a meeting between the President of Unity FC Richmond Osei and Referees for the Club’s 2019/20 Division One League match against Wa Suntaa.

In arriving at its decision, the Committee found that Mr. Nsiah had invited the Referee for the match, namely Foster Bastious and his Assistant Kingsley Asare to meet an official of Unity FC ahead of the said match. It was found that the official of Unity FC was Richmond Osei.

It was found that Daniel Kwame Nsiah received the money from the said Richmond Osei to serve as an intermediary and had communicated the request of Richmond Osei to the said referees.

The Committee found that the referees had rejected the gesture and had told Daniel Kwame Nsiah to return the money on the basis that they were not interested in Richmond Osei’s request for his team to be given favourable officiating in the match.

On the basis of its investigations, the Committee found Mr. Daniel Kwame Nsiah guilty of breaching Article 25.2 which imposes the following sanctions in case of violation:

  1. Banning from all football-related activities for a period of two years, and
  2. A fine of GHC5,000.

COMMITTEE’S DECISION

The decision of the Committee is:

  1. To waive the two-year ban that should have been imposed on Daniel Kwame Nsiah, for his cooperation with the Committee throughout the investigations.
  2. Daniel Kwame Nsiah is to pay the fine of GHC5000. Payment shall be made to the GFA within14 days after receipt of this Decision.

Should Mr. Daniel Kwame Nsiah be dissatisfied with or aggrieved by this Decision, he has within One (1) day of being notified of the grounds of the decision to appeal to the Appeals Committee of the Ghana Football Association.

The Ghana Football Association have finally bowed to pressures for clubs to record Premier League games.

This comes after Kotoko in their league opener against fellow Premier League opponents, Eleven Wonders, were disallowed to film.

This situation didn’t sit too well with the record holders of the Ghana Premier League, who had contracted VEO technologies to undertake videoing, production works of their matches for them this season.

However, in a video call meeting held on Monday by the Association and Chief Executive Officers of Premier League clubs on the way forward with respect to filming league games of the ongoing Ghana Premier League.

A conclusion was reached by both parties at the end of the discussion giving the clubs the nod to film the rest of their games.

In a related development, clubs will petition the Association on copies of the contract signed with the Chinese broadcasters, StarTimes.

The Ghana Premier League enters its third week with some interesting fixtures set to role out by the weekend.
