GPL WK 20 Roundup: Hearts, Dreams win, Kotoko held

This weekend’s pile of matches witnessed shocking results across some of the match venues in the country. Some of the teams did themselves proud as others will stare hard in the mirror at what hit them over the weekend.

Interestingly, Liberty Professionals was the only away side that defied odds to post a narrow victory over Eleven Wonders at the Obuasi Ley Clay Stadium, their second win of the second round in the league.

Bechem United made a mockery of their regional rivals, Aduana Stars when they dispatched them with ease at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park by four goals, Accra Hearts of Oak, Berekum Chelsea, Medeama SC made the most of their home advantage securing vital wins over Inter Allies, Ebusua Dwarfs, Legon Cities respectively.

Great Olympics failed to do a double over inform Kumasi Asante Kotoko when the pair played out a drab goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday night.

The Ohene Ameyaw Park will witness the ultimate game for the first round of the ongoing Ghana Premier League 2020-21 season when Techiman Eleven Wonders play host to rejuvenated Legon Cities for matchday 17 on Sunday.

The hosts have been largely inconsistent in the current season but one thing that will offer them a glimmer of hope is their 14 points they have accrued from their 7 games at home.

The Techiman based club occupies the 15th position on the log a spot above the drop zone with 17 points something head coach, Ignatius Osei Fosu will be hoping to change this weekend should the odds favour him against the Royals.

The Royals on the other hand have seen some positives in the last few games, they are currently unbeaten in eight games something they will be looking to better against the home side.

Bashiru Hayford will be a happy man this weekend considering the armory at his disposal, the likes of Hans Kwoffie has hit the ground running scoring 3 in 2 games aiding his goal tally to eight for the season, Jonas Attuquaye(3), Charles Danso(3), the resumption of Asamoah Gyan’s training as well as the loan signing of prolific predator Victorien Adebayor joining the side this week from HB Koge.

But Eleven Wonders will miss the services of talisman Ibrahim Salifu who joined Hearts of Oak in the window.

It promises to be a match of equal halves, with the away side having the upper hand in terms of previous duels, winning one and drawing the other in two games.

Prediction: Techiman Eleven Wonders 2-2 Legon Cities.

Hearts of Oak are it again and this time it’s against WAFA in the ultimate round of games in the Ghana Premier League 2021-21 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Since the departure of Kosta Papic, the home side has enjoyed a new lease form under interim coach, Samuel Nii Noi, who masterminded their impressive showings in the last three matches, picking seven from a possible nine points in three matches.

The top hierarchy of Hearts under the able leadership of Tobe Afede XIV has appointed Samuel Boadu tasked with the mandate of helping the capital-based club reclaim its glory days.

The home side has been very dominant on their home turf amassing 15 points aiding them to 7th on the log with 24 points.

The likes of Victor Aidoo (6), K.Obeng Junior (4), and Umar Manaf (3) have been firing but they need to up their game under the new coach, Samuel Boadu.

Prosper Narteh’s WAFA are bad travelers in the league, they have picked 4 points in as many games. Lawrence Agyekum, Augustine Boakye, Dwamena Michael Kyei will have to give off their best considering their bad run of form in the ongoing league.

PREDICTION: HEARTS OF OAK  2-0 WAFA

GPL Match Preview and Prediction: Aduana Stars vs Inter Allies

On the back of losing two consecutive matches to Dreams FC and AshGold in week fourteen and fifteen respectively of the ongoing domestic campaigns, they have a midweek clash against Inter Allies to redeem themselves from the frailties.

Paa Kwesi Fabian will have to refresh his tactics, as they take on a struggling Inter Allies side at the Nana Agyemang Badu II Park in Dorma in week 16.

The home side have flattered to deceive as most pundits considered them, as one of the numerous favorites to win the league, having won it on two separate occasions some years ago.

The Ogya boys have been very dominant at home amassing a total of 15 from 21 points adding to their total of 21 points from 15 games they have played in the ongoing league.

Inter Allies are feeling the full effects of failing to properly replace their personnel that left the shores of the country from technical men to players.

Having lost Tony Lokko, Henrik Lehm one would have expected them to replace the pair with able hands which they did with Danijel Mujkanovic, who, who has been unable to turn the club’s fortunes around as they languish at the bottom of the log with 11 points.

Aduana Stars have won six out of ten games the pair have played with Inter Allies winning only three and the others ending in a draw.

Predictions: Aduana Stars 3-0 Inter Allies

GPL Match Preview and Prediction: Asante Kotoko vs Bechem United

Ghana Premier League, Kumasi Asante Kotoko side will turn their attentions back to the ongoing domestic league after they were dumped out of the CAF continental competition by Algerian side ES Setif over the weekend.

The home side haven’t fared particularly well playing at their adopted home venue, Accra Sports Stadium, in over six matches that they have played at the capital stadium.

So far, they have picked 10 from a possible 18 points at home scoring 12 goals and conceding six in over 13 games.

The club has been heavily dependent on Kwame Opoku, who has since scored half of the 12 goals the club has scored in the ongoing league. He will be expected to lead the lines once again for the Porcupine Warriors.

Bechem United are slowly carving a niche for themselves under current head coach Kwesi ‘Klopp’’ Danso in the league, they occupy the 6th position of the log with a total 23 points.

A disappointing draw at home to Legon Cities saw the away head coach fume at his players for letting three points slip through their fingers, with the mid-week clash against Kotoko upcoming, they will have to play above their weights for all the maximum points.

Moro Salifu and Hafiz Konkoni have been integral to the success of the away side scoring 12 from a total of 18 goals with a two-goal deficit.

The pair have played on 14 separate occasions, Kotoko have edged nine victories, Bechem with two and the remaining ending in stalemates.

Prediction: Kotoko 2-1 Bechem United

OFFICIAL: Kosta Papic quits Hearts of Oak

Hearts of Oak head coach Kostadin Papic has ended over two and half months association with the former continental champions Accra Hearts of Oak on Monday, 15, February 2020.

Papic took over the head coach reigns from the then-interim coach, Edward Nii Odoom in efforts to salvage the dwindling fortunes of the capital-based club.

The 60-year-old oversaw 10 games following his appointment in November 2020, where he won four, drew three, and lost three.

Sources close to the Serbian, indicate that his resignation from the club was due to a bumper deal he had received from an unnamed Tanzanian club which is said to have lured him.

His assistant, Joseph Asare Bediako also resigned from his post last week citing personal reasons.

However, Accra Hearts of Oak are set to appoint former player, Yaw Preko, who knows the club through and through and was recently stop-gap coach for Olympics during the absence of Annor Walker.
