Mbappé and Messi took their teams’ first penalties and scored. Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez saved Kingsley Coman’s penalty kick.

Aurelien Tchouameni then missed again for France giving Argentina a two goal lead.

Gonzalo Montiel had the opportunity to win it for Argentina . He converted the penalty to the left side of goal and sparked wild celebrations.

Europe’s run of four straight World Cup winners, dating to 2006, came to an end in the just ended Qatar World Cup.

Ghana Black Stars defender, Daniel Amartey has opened up about the impact of Ayew’s penalty miss on the squad and subsequently on how they failed to get their acts together to secure qualification to the second round of the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The black stars were rewarded with an early penalty after Sergio Rochet clipped goal-bound Mohammed Kudus in the box in the 21st minute which saw captain Dede Ayew miss the resulting penalty with the South Americans winning the game by 2-0.

In a matter of six minutes, Giorgen de Arrascaeta scored to set the South Americans on the brink of qualification only to be denied by South Korea who beat Portugal in the other simultaneous game.

Speaking to FIFA+ after the game, Amartey, who couldn’t hide his disappointment at the loss opined that Ayew’s missed penalty had a daunting effect on the boys.

“It changed the game. If we score, we would go ahead of them but when he missed the penalty, they got their energy back…Our levels dropped. An early goal is most important and if we had scored they would have gone down.” he told FIFA+

Amartey played all 3 group games for Ghana, which saw them place last in Group H, which had Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay.

Otto Addo has left his role as Ghana head coach following the Black Stars’ elimination from the 2022 World Cup at the group stage.

The Borussia Dortmund assistant coach was already set to leave after the Mundial as his contract was extended until December.

“I always said if we qualified for the World Cup I’d resign afterwards, even if we were world champions,” he after Ghana lost 2-0 to Uruguay on Friday.

The 47-year-old was initial appointed on interim basis in February to replace sacked Milovan Rajevac, but got his contract extended after guiding Ghana to qualify for the World Cup.

He added, “my family see our future in Germany.

“Football is beautiful, sometimes it is ugly. It is ugly for us today. We have to learn and I’m very sure we will learn from this in the future.”

Ghana beat South Korea in between defeats by Portugal and Uruguay – in Addo’s final game – to finish bottom of Group H.

Hey, it’s me again. I know you are still basking in Ghana’s victory over South Korea, well that was a close shave if you ask me but nonetheless, the boys dove their hearts out to nick that win over the Asian giants.

The final 10 minutes of the game may have been longer than the 80 minutes that had just flown by, the edginess, and uneasy pain of losing it all after gallantly doing their best to cement the victory raced through lots of Ghanaian minds.

Friday 2nd, December 2022, Ghana will be at it again in its ultimate group fixture against familiar foes, Uruguay. This is a South American side that denied, Ghana, a place in the semi-finals courtesy of Luis Suarez’s handball in the last minute of regulation time, which saw hearts broken and shattered in South Africa in 2010.

In the game against South Korea, things could have gone south, if we hadn’t switched up our performances in the dying embers of the game to bask in that victory.

I took time to enumerate a few pointers that could help us secure qualification against Uruguay on Friday.

To start with, I need to pat coach Otto Addo and his technical team on the back for how they set up the side to play against the Koreans, the level of fluidity, creativity, and sheer confidence that the boys displayed in that first half was clearly no fluke, which culminated in the aiding the team to race to a 2-0 goals lead in the first half. On the back of losing to Portugal, it was clear, they had learnt their lessons, I for one clamored for the sacrifice of the 3 centre back pairings to make a room full an attacking force in midfield or a Wideman to create width and engineer crosses into the box for our lone forward Inaki Williams, who had crumbs to feed from the middle and full-back options.

I think a player in the model of Mohammed Kudus should be the focal point of our attack, how do you have a talent in his capacity and fail to get the best out of him, it’s just unheard of, a lot of countries make the most of the talented players, in the end, you are assured of goals and assists, which translates into wins for the team, bragging rights and happiness for the fans at large. Kudus’ talent can’t be underestimated and he’s shown that on successive occasions, I think the technical team should map up a strategy to bring the best out of the young bull. It’s no fluke that, he’s earned the feat as the first Ghanaian player to score a brace in the FIFA World Cup and has attracted admirers in Barcelona, Liverpool, Manchester United, and OGC Nice, France.

Another player that divides opinions is Thomas Partey of Arsenal, some section feel he doesn’t give off his best in BlackStars colors but I feel that criticism on the midfield anchor is a little bit on the stretch. Comparatively to the club side, he mostly sits deep, moves at will, power, pace and sets the team in motion for attacks, his defensive abilities in breaking the lines, and tackles is also worth pointing out but with Ghana, he’s mostly deployed in an advanced position with the idea that he can support the attack, assist and score occasional belters but how do you get him to thrive without affecting the shape and balance of the team. Personally, we need to play him in a more suitable role where he can purposely influence and impact games.

In the modern game, teams have the tendency of picking up wins from losing positions and vice versa, our last game against South Korea having posted a 2-0 first-half lead, you could see that complacency crept into the minds of the boys, who lazily conceded, two goals within a 3-minute interval, all from headers, a worrying sight which should be properly worked in training to prevent the team from conceding goals of such caliber in our last game to the Sky Blues.

Finally, we have our future in our hands against Uruguay, one thing that needs to be eschewed is the rationale for revenge. It’s something that has to be completely erased from the minds of the playing body and Ghanaians at large. The mantra should be geared towards securing qualification to the second round from Group H. I know it’s not beyond our boys to do the needful against an Uruguayan side that are winless in two games, having failed to score a goal in over 180 minutes of football action in Qatar. They will come to this game as wounded lions with the intention of winning which would dampen the hopes of Ghanaians.

Black Stars vice-captain, Thomas Partey has waded into claims that he doesn’t play above his usual weight levels when playing for the country.

This recent development spans about as a result of the midfielder’s subpar performance in Ghana’s opening two games, which has seen them lose one and draw with Uruguay in line for the next game.

According to Partey, he is only following the head coach’s instructions on the field despite requests numerous suggestions by Ghanaians to replicate his club form on the international stage for the Black Stars in the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

Speaking ahead off, the clash against Uruguay, the Arsenal star is unperturbed by the high expectations placed on him but claims he is executing his mandate as a player based on instructions by Coach Otto Addo.

“Most people will surely expect more from me, but we are playing as a team,” he told the media during the press conference ahead of Ghana’s game against Uruguay.

“I listen to the coach and look to do what he has asked me to correctly so that he will be happy.

“In the end you know you can do something better, but you need to stick to what the team wants and not the individual, I am doing my best,” he added.

Partey is expected to be an integral figure for the BlackStars as they face off with familiar foes Uruguay at the Al Janoub Stadium on Friday, December 2 for one of two slots to the second round of the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

A Mohammed Kudus brace was enough to ensure that the Ghana Black Stars edged out South Korea in a closely knitted game at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.

On the back of losing to Portugal by 3-2, the BlackStars’ only hope of staying in the competition was a win against the Koreans which they delivered with every ounce of sweat and blood.

Southampton defender scrapped in Ghana’s first in a goal mouth melee, his first-ever World Cup goal before minutes later, Kudus added the second, his first on the day.

In what looked as a comfortable lead for the BlackStars heading out of the break, they interestingly conceded two goals in three minutes from Cho Guesung, which set a premise for a reverting half hour finish.

Gideon Mensah making his debut in national colours for the BlackStars on the biggest stage sent in a cross which evaded Bilbao foward, Inaki WIlliams but not the poster boy, Kudus, who slotted home his second, the country’s third to down Korean hearts.

Coach Otto Addo rang triple substitution, Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew and Tariq Lamptey for Dennis Odoi, Daniel Kofi-Kyereh and Kamaldeen Sulemana, who played their bits to protect Ghana’s slender lead.

Ghana will hope to pick all 3 points or a draw against Uruguay in their last game to secure qualifications to the next round of the tournament.
