GPL Match Week 7 Report: Hearts, Karela, WAFA win in style as Medeama, Bechem, Sharks rue misses

This weekend’s score of fixtures produced some scintillating match results at the end of match proceedings of week seven of the ongoing  Ghana Premier League.

King Faisal and Dreams FC set the tone for the other clashes when they both knicked a point off each other after the referee called time on the match at the Ohene Ameyaw Park.

On Saturday, the Accra Sports Stadium saw Accra Hearts of Oak smash six past Bechem United, in a hugely anticipated duel, the home side made light of the Hunters, who will be wondering what hit them after conceding six in the second half of the game; their first loss, heaviest of the season and it’s club history.

Karela United continued their strong dominance at home and the league when they went past Elmina Sharks at the CAM park by 3-1. James Bissue shot the Sharks into the lead only to be pegged back with goals from Kwadwo Boateng, Richard Berko, and Diawusie Taylor to aid them up to second on the log.

The Sogakope Red Bull Arena saw goals flying from all cylinders, with the home side stealing the day, after a nine-goal thriller in the end by 5-4 goals. Daniel Lomotey the star of the show showed class and finesse finding the net four times against a spirited Medeama SC.

In other games on Sunday, Aduana Stars, Obuasi-based Ashanti Gold, Inter Allies and Liberty Professionals all recorded vital wins at home over Great Olympics, Berekum Chelsea, Eleven Wonders, Legon Cities to solidify their spot after seven rounds of games in the league.

Govt. implores GFA to make presentation on how to make the GPL safe again

The impact of the novel Coronavirus cannot be underestimated, lives have been lost as a result, major economies have granded to a halt, whiles football like many other disciplines have been severely affected.

The Ghana Football Association have held a series of virtual meetings with the government in ambition to restart the league but the country’s Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has implored the association to implement a comprehensive plan of how they think it will be safe to resume football activities and present it to the government for further deliberations.

In a recent interview with Accra based Atinka FM, he said lives were important in the current dispensation and asked the association not to be angry.

“Don’t be angry, we are talking about people’s safety here, protecting lives is at stake, so there should be no reason to be angry.”

“The football people should take their time and make a good representation of how they can play football again whiles they can still protect people, don’t be angry.” He added.

One of the country’s Associations being the Golf Association have sort to negotiate with the government with the sole purpose of getting it to lift the ban.

“When you do that government will have a discussion on it. For instance, the Golf Association has brought their presentation urging the government to open the various golf parks for them and even gave measures they have put in place to allow them to play their game amid COVID-19.”

“So this is not the time for GFA to be angry but rather should follow the same step,”

It remains to be seen if the GFA will follow in the footsteps of Germany in restarting the league or cancel it as some African countries have done, Kenya, Guinea, Congo, Zambia, Ethiopia, Mali, and others.
