I will win AFCON for Ghana – Herve Renard

Two time AFCON winning coach, Herve Renard has set his sights on winning the Afcon with Ghana, who have long been eluded with the most important trophy on the continent since 1982.

The Frenchman served as Ghana’s assistant coach under then-head coach Claude Ley Roy during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, which the country failed to win after hosting.

It’s been over three decades and after several showings at the tournament and twice coming close in recent times, 2010 as well as 2015, the former Ivory Coast manager fancies his chances with the Blackstars.

He has had several stints on the African terrain, winning his first of two with Zambia after a second spell in 2012 and Ivory Coast after beating Ghana to the trophy in 2015.

In a recent interview, with Tv3’s Juliet Bawuah, the French man has outlined his undying wish to help the country break their long wait for an AFCON trophy.

“Yes I have to come back one day to help one country to win, and that country hasn’t won it for a long time,” and that’s is your Country, Ghana, I will love to win this feat with the Black Stars”

Mr. Renard is the current manager of the Saudi Arabian national team.

Asamoah Gyan was a lazy player – Herve Renard

Experienced French trainer Herve Renard has made a shocking revelation about Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer, Asamoah Gyan, claiming the former Sunderland star was lazy in training.

According to Renard, who boasts of winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy two times, Gyan could have had a much better footballing career if he was dedicated and committed in training as he was during competitive matches.

Renard worked with Gyan when he was the assistant coach of the Black Stars during the 2008 AFCON which was staged in Ghana.

“The quality of Asamoah Gyan was amazing. I was always impressed with his timing of headers,” the Saudi Arabia coach said in an interview with TV3.

“He was a very good goalscorer, a fantastic player, an amazing player.

“But I have something to tell him. He was supposed to have a better career, but he was lazy,” Renard said while laughing.

“In training, he was lazy. He only likes games. But he was the most important player but I know him and he didn’t like the training, he only likes the competition, the games,” he concluded.

Gyan has scored 51 goals for Ghana, more than any player. He also has more World Cup goals (six) than any African footballer.

The 34-year-old is currently without a club after his short term deal with Indian side NorthEast United ended in January.
