Ghana Black Stars coach CK Akonnor reacted to Mohammed Salisu’s comments on not being ready to play for Ghana at the moment.

Mohammed Salisu stated earlier that he is not ready to play for Ghana at the moment as he is currently focusing on club football and will consider playing for Black Stars later.

“We are happy that he doing well, we have a lot of players playing in his position and we are satisfied with them,” CK Akonnor said

“What he said; when he is ready he will play for Ghana. We don’t have much deployment in that position, so we will look at him. When he is ready, he will let us know.” he concluded.

Mohammed Salisu who is still struggling to break into Southampton’s first team is once again not in the 30-man squad for Ghana’s friendly games against Morocco and Ivory Coast next month.

The English side triggered a buyout clause in the 21-year-old’s contract and he has signed a four-year deal to move to St Mary’s.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has been a huge admirer for the talented, who has been one of the centre-back target of the club this summer.

One of the most highly-regarded young centre backs playing in Europe right now, Salisu moved to Spanish top-flight side Valladolid from his homeland in 2017, first establishing himself in their second side, before quickly progressing into a key member of the first-team.

Salisu featured twice in the club’s Copa del Rey campaign in the 2018/19 season before becoming a regular in the 2019/20 campaign, making 32 appearances across all competitions, helping them to a notable improvement in their defensive record and also to a respectable 13th-placed finish.

English Premier League club Southampton have all but wrapped a deal to bring Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu to the club in the summer transfer window after triggering his £10.9 million release clause.

The 21-year old has agreed a four-year deal after passing his medicals this week.

Salisu caught the eye of many admirers this season with his breathtaking performances for his Spanish outfit. He featured 31 times scoring a goal to add up.

It’s no doubt that he drew interest from Manchester United, Westham, Everton, Valencia but the lure of playing regular football to continue his development appealed to him more hence the choice, Southampton.

Mohammed Salisu joined the youth ranks of Real Valladolid in 2017, before making his mark in the senior set up a year ago.

This deal represents an ideal chance for other young and exciting Ghanaian lads to give off their best with the idea of being scouted and signed by a top club soon.

Mohammed Kudus recently joined Dutch giants Ajax from  Nordsjælland, Thomas Partey as well flirting with the notion of moving to Arsenal or stay with Atletico Madrid.

Football has resumed in Europe’s top leagues bar France, who failed to resume after former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe cut the league into halves with its postponement much to the disappointment of many soccer-loving fans in the country and beyond.

Away from that, the Spanish La Liga resumed with lots of excitement surrounding it, considering the top sides Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid battling it out for supremacy.

But one gem that continues to impress since making his debut with La Liga outfit Real Valladolid is Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu having played 29 games and notching a goal to his credit.

The 21-year-old centre-back has swayed lots of interest from clubs in Europe, in England, ManUtd, Westham, Southampton, Everton are all set to be swooping for him whiles Stade Rennes have also expressed their undying interest in him.

He has a £10.8million release clause which makes him attractive to these clubs, who are keen to bolster their defence ahead of the new season in August.

Hopefully this young budding talent secures a move to one of these clubs to continue his football development.

Charles Kwabla Akonnor has explained why defender Mohammed Salisu was not included in the Black Stars squad for the double-header 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan.

Akonnor named his first Ghana squad on Tuesday with the Real Valladolid ace missing out.

His omission has left many surprised considering he has been consistently excelled this season in the Spanish top-flight. He has featured in all 26 league games Valladolid has played.

“I could not get in contact with him [in time],” Akonnor responded when he was asked of the defender at the news conference.

The Black Stars will host Sudan at Cape Coast Stadium on March 27 in Group C of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

It will be followed by a reverse fixture in Omdurman within three days.
