I regret sacking Maxwell Konadu – Nana Yaw Amponsah

It’s been two weeks since Asante Kotoko, let go of one of their illustrious men, Maxwell Konadu, who served the club at will from his playing days and later on as a head coach in two separate stints.

The gaffer was sacked following a shocking 1-0 loss to Accra Great Olympics at the Accra Sports Stadium amongst other dismal results the side recorded in the ongoing Ghana Premier League after five rounds of games.

However, Chief Executive Officer, Nana Yaw Amponsah has honestly admitted to taking a rush decision in sacking the former coach, as well as failing to officially inform the club’s Board of Directors of his intention to execute the decision to the latter.

In a recent media interview with Kumasi based Oyerepa FM, he opined that “I made a mistake for sacking Maxwell Konadu because I did not officially write to inform the board.”

He was quick to admit his mistakes leading to sacking the coach saying that, his records after five rounds of games (W1D2L1) wasn’t bad as people made it seem.

“I admit I am wrong and I accept that. Maxwell Konadu’s records at Kotoko was not bad but it was time for him to go and other big clubs in the world have done that but I again admit I was wrong for not informing the board.”

Post Maxwell Konadu, Kotoko have played two matches, one on the domestic scene as well as on the continental divide, winning through a solitary Imoro Ibrahim goal against Dreams at Dawu and losing 1-0 CAF Champions League opponents Al-Hilal ahead of the second leg in January.

Frimpong Manso unhappy with Maxwell Konadu Sacking

Asante Kotoko boss Frimpong Manso has aired his views on reasons leading to the sacking off former manager, Maxwell Konadu from club.

The Kumasi-based club let go off their former player and boss following their 1-0 defeat at the hands-off Accra Great Olympics in an outstanding GPL game played in mid-week.

According to Frimpong Manso, management should have exercised restraint in letting Maxwell Konadu leave the side after a year into his mandate as coach of the side.

The ex-player in an interview said, “The problem with the Kotoko team has to do with midfield. We should get time for coaches so they can build their teams. Team building takes time and club administrators must be patient”.

“If they were patient it could have been better. Now the problem will linger on because the new coach will now have to adapt to the players, also bring in his players”.

He however warned that the problem at the club was going to persist if they failed to remedy it.

In a related development, Great Olympics midfielder, Gladson Awako has waded into the growing circus making rounds that suggest the implicit decision to lay Maxwell Konadu from his role at the club. says the decision to sack Maxwell Konadu as the head coach of the club was a haste decision by the management.

“I am not part of the Kotoko team but I think it’s too early for Asante Kotoko to part ways with Head Coach Maxwell Konadu.”, Gladson Awako said in an interview.

Maxwell Konadu oversaw twenty-nine (29) games, won nine (9), drew seven (7), and lost five (5), in the process.

Kotoko have appointed Johnson Smith as the interim coach.

Naby Keita is better than all Kotoko strikers – Player’s agent

Naby Keita’s agent has attacked Asante Kotoko coach Maxwell Konadu for refusing to field his player this season, he revealed that his player is fit and not injured but Maxwell Konadu has chosen not to play him.

The striker is yet to play a game for Asante Kotoko this season, Maxwell Konadu is yet to include him in the match squad of any of their Ghana Premier League game or the CAF Champions League games.

Asante Kotoko have been relying on two strikers this season; Kwame Poku and Osman Ibrahim, and they have both scored two goals each this season for the club.

Naby Keita’s agent, however, thinks that his player is better than all the strikers at Kotoko and should be playing instead of being sidelined.

“Naby Keita is fit and not injured but the coach has decided not to use him. For now, he is still part of the Kotoko team so anytime he is called upon he will play” Kouadio told Kumasi-based radio station OTEC FM

“No one is begging anybody to use him (Keita), he is a good striker and I can boldly tell you that none of the Kotoko attackers is better than him,” he added.

Maxwell Konadu explains why Samuel Frimpong and Nettey played in midfield against Legon Cities

Asante Kotoko injury concerns continued in their narrow 1-0 win against Legon Cities on Friday night at the Accra Sports Stadium as three players went out injured in the first half of the game.

Goalscorer Osman Ibrahim was the first to be substituted after he went down holding his groin minutes after scoring what would later be the only goal of the game, his replacement was Evans Adomako.

Adom Frimpong also went out a few minutes later and was replaced by Sulley Muniru, the final substitution was made by half time when Keyekeh was replaced by defender Samuel Frimpong.

Maxwell Konadu deployed Samuel Frimpong to the midfield to play alongside Sulley Muniru in the second half while Evans Adomako moved up front to play alongside Kwame Poku.

The Frimpong-Sulley partnership seemed off as it invited Legon Cities to attack and create more chances than the Porcupines in the second half. In bid to stabilize the midfield, Maxwell Konadu asked Nettey to move to the midfield and Samuel Frimpong dropped back to the right-back position.

Many found the tactics and setup strange but it was good enough to stop Legon Cities from scoring an equalizer.

After the game, Maxwell Konadu was asked to explain why Latif Anabila wasn’t deployed into the midfield since he was the only central midfielder left on the bench.

“We can’t put everything out there, because Anabila just came from injury and the way the game was developing, we didn’t want a player coming back from injury to play in that tempo; anything could happen. So we needed a much-fitted player to go and play so we have a much better 45 minutes.

When asked why Samuel Frimpong switched with Christopher Nettey later in the game.

“We have many versatile players and they can play in different positions. At a point,  we were planning to bring Asamah to the midfield. So that is how good they are, they can play two to three positions and when we move them around, they are comfortable” he added.

Asante Kotoko will be looking to continue with this winning mentality when they face Great Olympics in their next game.

We’ll need six weeks of training before league resumption — Maxwell Konadu

Head coach of Asante Kotoko Maxwell Konadu says he will need six weeks to prepare his team before the resumption of the Ghana Premier League.

President Nana Akufo-Addo in his latest address stated that all contact sports, including football, remain suspended until July 31 as part of measures to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus disease.

All football competitions, including the Premier League, have been at a standstill since a ban on public gatherings came into force on March 15.

“We will need about six weeks to get our players back to where they were before this whole crisis. Football will come back one day. Should government or GFA give us go-ahead to resume, we will need six weeks of training,” Konadu said on Happy FM.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has held talks with the national government about the possible resumption of the sport but the proposal was turned down.

The GFA has said it would not decide the fate of the disrupted 2019-20 season until June 30, despite increasing pressure for a prompt resolution.

The Premier League was at the match week 15 stage – with Aduana Stars on top of the table – when the competition was brought to a halt.

As of Thursday, June 4, the West African nation has registered 8,548 cases involving 38 deaths, 3,132 recoveries, and 5,378 active cases.
