FIFA clears Asante Kotoko

World football governing body, FIFA has closed its file on the issues relating to player, Kwame Bonsu, Asante Kotoko and Esperance.

In a letter dated May 4, 2020 and signed by Head of Players’ Status at FIFA, Erika Montemor Ferreira; FIFA said it would “proceed to the closure of the file” after the amicable agreement between the two clubs.

FIFA’s correspondence came two days after it received a communication from Closemarking Consult, the firm that aided Kotoko in the matter, explaining that the two clubs have successfully resolved the issue.

Esperance had earlier delayed in paying Bonsu’s transfer fee in view of the unresolved issues around the signing of Emmanuel Clottey. Kotoko would subsequently be fined US$240,000 by FIFA with the breakdown as follows – transfer fee US$180,000; accrued interest, US$45,000 and legal charges – US$15,000.

A pact was however reached between Kotoko and Esperance to waive the US$45,000 accrued interest; US$150,000 being Bonsu transfer fee paid as part payment to offset the US$180,000 debt with the remaining US$30,000 rather paid by Kotoko.

With the necessary payments thus made and acknowledged by Esperance and FIFA, Kotoko now have a clean bill of health and would suffer no transfer ban in consequence.

Asante Kotoko settle $240,000 Esperance debt

Asante Kotoko have finally settled their $240,000 fine imposed by FIFA over the wrongful registration of striker, Emmanuel Clottey in 2015 have been settled, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

Here is the official statement from the club:

The debt owed Tunisian club, Esperance, and FIFA over the wrongful registration of striker, Emmanuel Clottey in 2015 have been settled.

Executive Chairman, Kwame Kyei paid the Tunisians to clear the fine imposed on us by the world football governing body, FIFA.

A $240,000 fine was slapped on the club by FIFA, comprising $180,000 for the player’s transfer, $45,000 representing accrued interest, and $15,000 for the failure to respect a FIFA decision.

Thus $30,000 was paid to the Tunisian side after reaching an agreement with them to write off the $45,000 accrued interest on the total figure.

FIFA gave us up to May 17, 2020, to settle the debt or face a transfer ban on the national and international fronts.

Club Spokesperson, Kennedy Boakye-Ansah tells Kotoko Express App that both clubs have written to FIFA to officially inform it of the settlement.

“Dr Kwame Kyei has paid the amounts due Esperance and FIFA in the Emmanuel Clottey issue,” he confirmed.

“Thirty thousand ($30,000) US Dollars go to Esperance as an addition to the $150,000 owed Kotoko for the transfer of Kwame Bonsu.

“The Executive Chairman also paid $15, 000 to FIFA. We are grateful to Dr. Kyei and also to Ashford Tetteh Oku of Close Marking Consult for the smooth closure of this case.”

Pay or be relegated – FIFA warn Kotoko

Ghana Premier League champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko have been ordered by FIFA to pay in full an amount of $180,000 to Tunisian giants Esperance or be relegated to the lower division of Ghana Football.

The Porcupine Warriors have just two weeks to clear their long-standing debt owed to the Tunisian outfit.

This week the Red Devils received a letter from FIFA informing them of their decision, as such the Ghana FA were also informed of the repercussions if the Ghanaian club failed to honor their side of the provisions of the letter.

Esperance have already frozen $150,000 owed Kotoko over the transfer of Kwame Bonsu meaning the latter must pay $30,000 to clear the debt.

Kotoko will have to mobilize $30,000 to add up to the $150,000 in Esperance’s custody.

This week Esperance’s vice president Walid, when interviewed on Kumasi based Nhyira FM, shared these few words.

“Kotoko have received a letter from FIFA which orders them to pay us $180,000 for the wrongful signing of Emmanuel Clottey”

“We don’t owe them but rather they owe us $30,000 and they have to settle us before the date stated in the letter from FIFA”

“We bought Kwame Bonsu for $150,000 and they also owe us $180,000. We need the money badly, so we’re waiting for it.”

If Kotoko wants this matter properly adjudicated in their favor they will need to find every document pertaining to the signing of their then striker Emmanuel Clottey from Esperance some five years or face the full wrath of FIFA, who are calling for their demotion to the Division One failure to pay in full the amount owed the Tunisian giants.
