The U20 Africa Cup of Nations kicked off on Sunday 14th of February in Mauritania, Cameroon sealed a 0-1 victory against the host, thanks to a second-half strike from Sunday Junior.

Newcomers Mauritania were outclassed by Mali in their first ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance. Mali registered a commanding 4-1 victory.

Abdoulay Diaby opened the scoring in the 38 minutes of the game to put his side in front, Marega added the second from the penalty spot just seconds before half time.

Noss scored Mali’s third goal in the 55th minute with a great finish.

Mauritania grabbed one back from the spot as they ignite dreams of a comeback, but the dreams were shattered when Traore scored Mali’s fourth goal of the game to seal the win.

Ghana Black Stars signed off their international duties with a 3-1 win against Mauritania at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, thanks to goals from Kwesi Appiah, Caleb Ekuban and Thomas Partey.

The friendly was scheduled after their last AFCON qualifiers game against Kenya, Mauritania flew to Accra to play the Black Stars as part of the preparations for their first ever Africa Cup of Nations.

Kwesi Appiah opened the scoring for Ghana three minutes into the game with a perfectly placed penalty kick to put his team in front.

Adama Ba Equalized for Mauritania just a few minutes into the second half with a beautiful free kick from the edge of the box.

Caleb Ekuban put Ghana back in front with a fine header in the 70th minute, that was his second goal in two games for Ghana.

Thomas Partey sealed the victory with an audacious strike to the rooftop just two munites after Ekuban’s goal to put Ghana in a commanding position.

Earlier reports suggested that Ghana Black Stars friendly game against Mauritania was cancelled but there has been a new development, Mauritania arrived in Ghana on Sunday for the friendly game scheduled for Tuesday.

The Black Stars were supposed to play Rwanda but couldn’t reach an agreement with their FA, Sahara Football understands.



Mauritania arrived in Ghana on Sunday and began preparations for the friendly game against the Black Stars, this year’s AFCON will be their first ever.

Ghana Black Stars will play Rwanda in a friendly in Kigali after the game against Mauritania was called off.

Black Stars were supposed to play Mauritania three days after playing the AFCON qualifier game against Kenya but plans have changed as the team will now travel to play Rwanda instead.

The Black Stars team will leave for Kigali on Monday after the game against Kenya.

The Black Stars of Ghana will play Mauritania in an International friendly on March 26th in Accra as part of preparations for AFCON 2019. 

Ghana will host the Lions of Chiguetti three days after facing Kenya in the final AFCON 2019 qualifier in Accra.

Both Ghana and Mauritania have already qualified for the Nations Cup in Egypt. But Mauritania are traveling to Burkina Faso for their final AFCON qualifier on March 22nd.

For Mauritania, Egypt 2019 will be their first-ever Nations Cup appearance.



Twenty four players were invited to Ghana’s camp for the March international break – where they get to play both Kenya and Mauritania. Both games will afford Kwasi Appiah the opportunity to assess all invited players.

The Africa Cup of Nations will be played for the first time in June.
