Asante Kotoko were eliminated from the CAF Champions League after losing 3-0 to Etoile du Sahel in the second leg of their preliminary stages tie in Tunisia and their head Head coach Kjetil Zachariassen has attributed the heavy defeat to the inexperience of his team.

The Porcupines failed to take advantage of their 2-0 first leg victory on Sunday, Etoile du Sahel were too strong for them as they showed their class to qualify to the group stages with a 3-2 win on aggregate.

“We didn’t stick to the plan, we played a little strange football; sorry to say but we showed that we don’t have too much experience at this level. They showed they have more experience and they used it. A long list of things were not good enough” he said



Following their elimination from the CAF Champions League, Asante Kotoko have been relegated to the CAF Confederation Cup and will make the group stages if they win in the playoffs.

“The boys are ready to learn and bring it to the Confederation Cup. The list is long of the things that we didn’t do well. We just have to learn from this. A lot of lessons. Most of it all, the mental side of it. We’ve got to be prepared in another way. Its got to be a mental thing, we did a lot of things in a wrong way. We have to learn from it” he stressed

Kjetil Zachariassen also added that his team are not yet ready for the CAF Champions League and will go again in the CAF Confederation Cup.

“This is our level at the moment. We are confederation Cup and I think that’s the right level for us. We have to be realistic. We’ve got to be realistic because we have only worked together for three months” he added.

Asante Kotoko will know their opponent in the CAF Confederation Cup playoffs next month.

Asante Kotoko crash out of the CAF Champions League after suffering a 3-0 defeat against Etoile du Sahel away from home in the second leg of their CAF Champions League tie.

Etoile du Sahel were too strong for the Porcupines as they qualify to the group stages after winning 3-2 on aggregate.

Etoile du Sahel took the lead in the 24th minute via a controversial penalty; Mortadha Ben Ouanes converted the spot-kick to put his team in front.

Karim Aribi doubled the lead for his team in the 66th minute with a great header after connecting with Lahmar Hamza’s cross.

Ben Aziza was sent off in the 80th minute after pulling Richard Arthur’s shirt.

Karim Aribi scored again in the 86th minute to put his team in the 2019/20 CAF Champions League group stages.

Asante Kotoko head coach Kjetil Zachariaseen has stated that his team are traveling to Tunisia with the intention of also sealing a win in the second leg of their CAF Champions League game against Etoile du Sahel.

Asante Kotoko secured a 2-0 win in the first leg at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and their head coach has revealed that his team will replicate the first leg result on Sunday when they face Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia.

“I always go into matches with the intention to win the match, that’s our goal now, we want to go to Tunisia to win,” he told Oyerepa FM.

“We will try to win the match. There’s no injury now apart from those sidelined before we started the competition like Maxwell Baakoh”.

Asante Kotoko will leave the shores of Ghana on Thursday for Tunisia ahead of their crucial game on Sunday.

The Porcupines will host North African side Etoile du Sahel in the first leg of their preliminary stages game and will hope to register a positive result in the encounter.

“We are ready as we can be for the match. We are facing a very strong and tactical side so we have to be prepared, and we are prepared with the team we have” he said.
