The long unbeaten runs of Jonina Ladies and Ampem Darkoa Ladies came to an end on Matchday 8 of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League, as surprises unfolded across both the Southern and Northern Zones.

In the Southern Zone, Jonina Ladies suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 1–0 to Army Ladies at the Teshie Mats Park. The decisive moment came in the 70th minute, when Linda Achiaa struck to hand Army Ladies a crucial victory and end Jonina’s impressive run. Despite the loss, Jonina Ladies remain top of the Southern Zone standings, level on 19 points with Army Ladies but ahead on goal difference.

Elsewhere in the Northern Zone, champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies were beaten 2–1 by Dreamz Ladies at the Bantama AstroTurf, also ending their unbeaten start to the campaign. Ajegipina Zakaria, the league’s leading scorer, opened the scoring in the 16th minute to extend her tally to 10 goals for the season. However, Dreamz Ladies mounted a swift comeback, scoring in the 24th and 32nd minutes to secure the win before halftime.

Despite the setback, Ampem Darkoa Ladies remain firmly at the summit of the Northern Zone with 19 points, maintaining a strong lead over second-placed Royal Fosu Ladies, who now have 14 points following a 1–1 draw with Kumasi Sports Academy on the same matchday.

In another key development, the race for the Golden Glove intensified after Hasaacas Ladies played out a goalless draw with Police Ladies. The result saw Grace Buoadu Banwaa of Hasaacas register her sixth clean sheet of the season, drawing level with Osman Huzeimah of Jonina Ladies at the top of the clean-sheet chart.

Matchday 8 has therefore delivered a major shift in momentum across the Women’s Premier League, ending unbeaten streaks while keeping both Jonina Ladies and Ampem Darkoa Ladies in control of their respective zones as the title race continues to heat up.

After two match days, Breman Essiam Socrates from the Central Region were crowned leaders with a 100% win rate, determined to pick up from where they left off in last year’s competition.

Last season, they almost earned a slot after four attempts, only edged out after a protest cost them the chance.

Newbies Ridge city finished second to book a spot in the Women’s premier league after recording 3 wins, 1 defeat and 1 draw.

Western Region’s Hassport Ladies  lost 2-0 in their opening game against Socrates and followed it up with a 3-1 win against Volta Region’s Anlo Ladies on Monday before the game ended abruptly because Anlo Ladies didn’t have enough players to continue after a number of their players pulled out due to injuries.
