Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko seal partnership with Southampton

Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko and English side Southampton have partnered with each other in a move that will be beneficial to both sets of clubs.

This new development will see the premier league club offer technical and non-technical support to the Ghanaian giants in the area of youth development, coaching, marketing among others to ensure the development of the club.

In a statement released by Southampton to confirm the partnership deal,

“The partnership will include Academy staff exchange visits between the UK and Ghana, as well as opportunities for Asante Kotoko’s young players to attend annual UK Player Development camps and experience the Southampton Academy methodology first-hand when travel corridors open up and it is safe to travel”.

“During these challenging times, we’re delighted to have agreed a long-term partnership to work with Asante Kotoko. Nana Yaw has a clear vision for Asante Kotoko to be a self-sustainable football club both on and off the pitch. We look forward to working with him and his team to support their development”, Mark Abrahams, Director of Business and Community Development.

Asante Kotoko’s CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah also shared his thoughts on this deal which has been welcomed by Ghanaians.

“This partnership enables us to plug Asante Kotoko into Southampton in such a way that Kotoko functions like Southampton. Kotoko would have everything Southampton has but to a level that reflects our different budgets. I believe that with the expertise and resources available at Southampton, we can tap into this and develop our setup to look and feel professional like Saints.”,

Hopefully, this represents a new dawn for the Kumasi-based club to tap into the rich expertise of the English Premier League side, who have produced lots of great names across the world; Sadio Mané, Virgil van Dijk, Luke Shaw, James Ward-Prowse, and others.

The English side triggered a buyout clause in the 21-year-old’s contract and he has signed a four-year deal to move to St Mary’s.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has been a huge admirer for the talented, who has been one of the centre-back target of the club this summer.

One of the most highly-regarded young centre backs playing in Europe right now, Salisu moved to Spanish top-flight side Valladolid from his homeland in 2017, first establishing himself in their second side, before quickly progressing into a key member of the first-team.

Salisu featured twice in the club’s Copa del Rey campaign in the 2018/19 season before becoming a regular in the 2019/20 campaign, making 32 appearances across all competitions, helping them to a notable improvement in their defensive record and also to a respectable 13th-placed finish.

English Premier League club Southampton have all but wrapped a deal to bring Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu to the club in the summer transfer window after triggering his £10.9 million release clause.

Salisu caught the eye of many admirers this season with his breathtaking performances for his Spanish outfit. He featured 31 times scoring a goal to add up.
