Eredivisie, NAC has added André Ayew (36), a new striker to its squad. The experienced French-Ghanaian striker has signed a contract until the end of the current season, with a club option for another season in Breda.

According to the club, Ayew has passed up several (lucrative) opportunities in recent months, having been without a club since last summer. He played his last competitive matches at Le Havre in May 2025. In the meantime, Ayew has maintained his fitness at Nania FC, owned by his father and African football legend Abédi Pelé.

The Ghanaian international has over 120 caps (and 24 goals for his country), has a rich record. Ayew made his mark, particularly at Olympique de Marseille, Swansea City, and West Ham United. He has almost 600 official appearances in the Champions League, Ligue 1, Ligue 2, Premier League, Championship, and the Turkish Super Lig, scoring over 160 goals in those competitions.

Speaking about his transfer to Breda Ayew said: “I’m someone who really enjoys challenges, both personally and as part of a team. I find that here at NAC. I want to do everything I can to help the club and my teammates. We’re in a situation where staying in the Eredivisie is the only thing that matters. The mental aspect is perhaps the most important thing in this situation. Together with our supporters, we must fight this battle head-on in the second half of the season.”

Technical Director Peter Maas explains Ayew’s arrival. “André is eager to help NAC in their fight for survival. That’s become very clear from our conversations. We’re currently in a difficult position with NAC. Ayew has also faced some tough times in his career. He’s a true sportsman who takes good care of himself. We believe that with his experience and specific qualities, he can be of value to NAC right now.”

Ayew joins head coach Carl Hoefkens’ squad immediately. NAC will resume training on Friday, January 2nd, at the BO Infra Training Complex in Zundert.

”Black Stars need $25m for 2022 AFCON and World Cup campaigns” – Sports Minister

Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has revealed that the senior national team, the Black Stars, will require an amount of $25 million to fund their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Cameroon, as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

This was revealed at a breakfast meeting with Chief Executive Officers from corporate Ghana at the Jubilee House in Accra on Monday.

The Black Stars have already booked their spot at next year’s AFCON and will start the qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup in June.

In order to adequately fund both campaigns, the Minister has embarked on fund-raising efforts from corporate Ghana to support the team.

“It is the dream of the nation to win the Africa Cup of Nations again in Cameroon next year, and to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” the Sports Minister said.

“These campaigns require a substantial amount of investment to be able to execute this mandate, approximately $25 million and government alone cannot shoulder this responsibility at the expense of other sporting disciplines.

“Supporting the Black Stars will enable the government to use the sports budget to support other disciplines especially as we gear towards the Tokyo Olympic Games.

“Historically, the Black Stars have performed well every time corporate Ghana has backed them and it is our hope that you will do same again,” Mustapha Ussif told a gathering of CEOs from corporate Ghana.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, announced at the meeting that government will provide $10 million of the required amount with a 5-member committee, headed by the Sports Minister, tasked to raise the remaining $15 million.

Ghana played out a pulsating 1-1 draw with Rainbow nation, South Africa in the penultimate game of group C match in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the FNB Stadium then two days later; they crowned it off with a 3-1 victory over Sao Tome and Principe at the Accra Sports Stadium.

In the end, Ghana will be pleased with its ninth consecutive qualification to the continent’s biggest football tournament together with Sudan, who did everything humanly possible to secure the second slot ahead of South Africa.

Ghana may have qualified for next year’s tournament but they are a few things that need ratifications if the country wants to end its long wait for a major continental trophy.

The Ghana Football Association will have to give CK Akonnor the freehand to operate and make salient decisions for the overall welfare of the assembled team at his disposal. In the lead up to this recent doubleheader against South Africa, Sao Tome, and Principe, the head coach is on record to have suggested that, there were some players, he didn’t name in the squad but found them on the final list that was released days before the penultimate and ultimate round of games in the AFCON qualifiers.

This development will not sit well with any head coach, who cannot freely express himself in the portfolio; he has been assigned.

On the part of the FA efforts, they can fully support the coach in diverse ways to fully realize his set targets and objectives which will rub well on their administration.

The technical team has an arduous task to select the very best of players all around the globe to represent the country. That means that, they have to extensively travel, scout across the length, breadth of the country, and beyond to hand opportunities to players passionate, determined about the course and fit to play for the nation.

CK will have to stamp his authority on the team; it’s been over a year since he was appointed head coach and anytime the team plays, there’s no clear pattern or identity you could label them with.

In the doubleheader, that was played, they could barely string multiple passes together, some argued, it’s because a host of first-team players failed to turn up (Ayew brothers, Partey) and others but the question is, if something happens to the aforementioned, it spells doom for Akonnor.

That’s where, I will suggest that the team needs to have a strong bench to fall back on in times of need, as well as select the best of players plying their trade in the Ghana Premier League which will encourage others to also give off their best with an idea of national team call-up and a foreign contract to reward their efforts.

In between now and next year’s tournament, there are a lot of things that need to be placed on the right track in order to facilitate the team to win its fifth trophy, which has long eluded it for over three decades.

Kwesi Appiah loses interest in Football

Former Ghana coach, Kwasi Appiah, has cast doubts over his return to the field anytime soon despite consistent links to clubs around the world.

Kwesi Appiah since leaving his job with the Blackstars after his contract was not renewed by the Kurt Okraku led administration has been linked with clubs locally as well as top sides on the African terrain.

In a recent interview with a Kumasi-based radio station, Wontumi FM, when queried as to whether he will return to the field sooner than later, the ex-Black Stars gaffer disclosed that he was fully focused on pursuing other harbored dreams.

“Now I am not interested in football; my concentration is on other things, although I don’t know what will happen in the future,

But I don’t want to know anything about football” he stressed.

Appiah’s first stint with Blackstars as head coach was for a two year period, April 2012 to September 2014, before moving on to manage Sudanese giants, Al Khartoum Al Watani SC between December 2014 and April 2017.

In April 2017, Appiah was back at the helm of affairs as Blackstars head coach for a duration of two years.

It’s currently unknown if Kwesi Appiah will change his stance on staying away from football and return to management in a full-time capacity once he gets a mouthwatering deal he can’t afford to turn down.

Legon Cities’ Fatau Dauda open to Black Stars return

Ghana and Legon Cities goalkeeper, Fatau Dauda is eyeing a return to the Black Stars following a long absence from the national team since the 2014 World Cup.

Fatau Dauda was the first choice goalkeeper under former coach Kwasi Appiah.

Following Ghana’s disastrous campaign at the tournament, Fatau Dauda has not been called to the Black Stars and is hoping to reclaim a spot in Charles Kwabla Akonnor’s team.

Dauda who joined Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities this season from Nigerian side Enyimba FC says he is still ready to accept a call-up.

“There are a lot of players in the queue who want to play for the national team so I am still active”

“If they invite me to come and play for the black stars why not I will welcome the invitation because I am still active and playing, “he said.

The former AshantiGold goalkeeper made his debut for the Black Stars in 2008 and featured at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil for the national team.

I won’t ban ‘jama’ in Black Stars – CK Akonnor

Despite being widely acknowledged to be a strict tactician, Black Stars head coach, Charles Kwablan Akonnor has no immediate plans to ban ‘jama’ sessions by the squad.

The Black Stars are famous for their entertaining ‘jama’ sessions, where they sing and dance prior to their games, especially in major tournaments like the AFCON and the World Cup.

While many have argued that the ‘jama’ before the matches helps ease any nerves the players might have before big matches, others suggest that it results in players not focusing before games and even tiring themselves out.

With Akonnor’s ‘no-nonsense’ reputation, there have been discussions as to whether he will allow these sessions to continue.

However, Akonnor said he cannot see himself cancelling something that has become a staple of the side.

“No. no no. It’s part of us,” he said emphatically

The Black Stars head coach, however, added that he expects periods of concentration from his players prior to their matches.

He admitted that it was important for players to motivate themselves for matches before they enter the dressing rooms and before they walk onto the pitch.

Despite this, he insisted that in the dressing room, it was important for the players to focus on the task ahead of them.

“You can’t be singing all the way to the pitch. When you sing a little, you relax a little,” Akonnor said on Citi TV‘s pidgin sports show Football Made in Ghana.

“Football requires concentration. We could be joking an hour prior to the game but after that, you need to concentrate on the game. You can’t be joking all the time otherwise, you’ll be joking when you get on the field”

Ghana Black Stars coach CK Akonnor has revealed that his goal is to improve individual players in the Ghana national team which will eventually affect the team results.

While talking to Citi TV, the former Kotoko manager revealed that individual improvement will affect the team play and will eventually affect the team as a whole.

I’m looking forward to improving individual players and improve the team as a result,” he told Citi TV.

“[Once] the team improves, it affects their play. That is my goal. So every time I am thinking about who can fit into certain positions and how we can play. Overall I just want to improve the team.”

With most of the players set to return to football after the coronavirus break, the ex-Black Stars captain revealed he has been in touch with his players.

“I’ve been trying to stay in touch with the [Black Stars] players while they are at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We usually chat via video calls. I also read lots of books to keep myself ready,” said Akonnor.

CK Akonnor handed two years contract as Black Stars coach

Charles Kwabla Akonnor has been officially appointed as head coach of the senior national team of the country, Blackstars.

The former Kotoko gaffer took over the head coach position after serving as assistant to the then head coach James Kwesi Appiah, who was let go after failing to land a contract renewal with the new GFA headed by Kurt Okraku.

Akunnor was handed a two (2) year contract and will receive $25,000 as a monthly salary,$10,000 short of what made the former manager was receiving at the time in that role as coach of the Blackstars.

The 46-year-old will be assisted by David Duncan, who has loads of experience managing top sides in Hearts, Kotoko, Ashgold as well as other national sides of the country.

Coach CK Akonnor has been tasked to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana and Newcastle United winger, Christian Atsu has rubbished reports making headlines this week that he has retired from national team duties with the senior setup, Black Stars.

This week reports surfaced that the former Bournemouth winger had held fruitful deliberations with the current head coach of the side, CK Akonnor off his desire to discontinue playing for the nation.

A confidante to the Ghanaian international said the player was displeased about how he had received minimal support from the handlers of the national team when he got injured during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

He further suggested that Atsu only asked to be exempted from the Sudan duel as he had only recovered from a long term injury and needed maximum time to fully heal in order to get back to his level best for club and country.

“Atsu told the coach he should excuse him from the Sudan game because he just returned from injury but he pledged his support to the coach.

“I will urge Ghanaians to disregard any reports. Atsu is still a member of the Black Stars and ready to play anytime he is called upon,” he added.

Christian Atsu currently plies his trade with Newcastle United in the Premier League which is currently suspended as the globe battles the pandemic, Corona Virus.
