It took us 3 days to psyche the players up – Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko

Ghana Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko has revealed that the U23 players were ‘down’ after the 1-1 draw against Algeria at the Accra Sports Stadium last week and he and his staffs had to motivate them ahead of the second leg.

Ghana U23 secured a 1-0 victory against Algeria to qualify for the U23 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday night, thanks to a solo goal from Yaw Yeboah.

Ibrahim Tanko stated that they had to psyche the players up before the game because they were ‘down’ and needed all the motivation they could get.

“It wasn’t easy after the first game as most of them were down. It took us two to three days to psyche them up and make them believe that they can beat them in their home ground,” he said.

He also stated that his team will do all they can to qualify for the 2020 Olympics.

We are doing our best to qualify the team to the Olympic games to break our absence hiatus of the Olympics”

“I learnt a lesson from the first leg and I think that accounted for the victory,” he added

Ghana in talks to play African champions Algeria in friendly next month

Ghana FA are in talks with African champions Algeria for a friendly for the Black Stars to be played next month, according to Ghanasoccernet.com

According to sources within the Algeria Football Federation, the Black Stars have been contacted by the Desert Foxes for the match to played in the Algerian capital of Algiers next month.

The match has been tentatively fixed for 5th or 9th September depending on the opponents the Algerian FA authorities can get to play against.

The match for the Black Stars is being negotiated to be played during the FIFA international break which starts from September 3 to 11th 2019.

With the 2022 preliminary World Cup matches started within that date, other countries who are not playing in that window are free to line up friendlies to keep their sides fit.

It is in this direction that the African champions are seeking to invite the Black Stars to play the match in Algiers to start their preparation for the qualifiers.

With the Ghana FA looming it is feared that the Normalisation Committee would not be able to reach a deal to enable the Black Stars to play the much-needed game.

The match is needed to give the coaching staff the chance to re-examine their squad after they disastrously bombed out at the second round of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Since the Normalization Committee took over the reigns of Ghana football, they have been unable to organize friendlies for the Black Stars in FIFA International friendlies date.

The Black Stars have not played any warm-up games during a FIFA date for international friendlies since the interim body assumed office.

In fact, the only friendlies the national team has played under the watch of the NC is against Namibia and South Africa in preparation for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana’s inactivity during the international break is likely to cost the Black Stars on the world ranking.

AFCON 2019: Algeria crowned champions of Africa for the second time

Baghdad Bounedjah’s first minute deflected effort handed Algeria their second Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title after a 29-year wait with a 1-0 victory over Senegal in a highly charged final at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday night.

Algeria who were playing only their second final since 2010 held on to the slim advantage for the rest of the 90 minutes while Senegal’s wait for a maiden AFCON title still lingers on. It is another case of so near yet so far away, the Lions of Teranga having lost another final in 2002 in Mali.

Within the opening minute, Algeria was one goal up. Bounedjah picked the ball after Chekou Kouyate had missed his attempted tackle on the left, drifted in and struck a shot that came off Salif Sane, the man coming in for the suspended Koulubaly.

The ball took a punishing dip beyond the keeper into the net with one half of the stadium stunned into silence while the other half in green and white of Les Fennecs roared in a deafening crescendo.

Algeria’s tact of starting off quick and playing the ball in Senegal’s half worked perfectly until halfway through when the Teranga Lions started roaring slowly into the game.

In the 26th minute, Henry Saivet attempted to catch keeper Adi-Rais Mbohli off his guard with a freekick from range, but the hawk-eyed shot-stopper adjusted quickly to gather.

Mbaye Niang had a brilliant effort later with a superbly struck volley from range. The burly forward chested the ball down from 20 yards out and took a sweet volley on the half-turn, his stinging effort going just over.

At the stroke of halftime, Sane almost made amends in exact same fashion he had conceded in the first minute, but this time is strike from range off a corner was deflected over the bar.

The second half started in as much pace as the first had ended and Senegal thought they had been given a lifeline on the hour mark when Djamel Benlamri seemed to have handled the ball inside the box off a Sarr cross.

However, after consulting the VAR, the referee overturned his earlier decision of a penalty and gave possession back to the Algerians.

Algeria managed to hold on to the score-line and secured the Cup of Nations crown with an unbeaten run.

First-half goals from Riyad Mahrez and Baghdad Bounedjah were enough to see off any resistance from the Kenyan side as Algeria used their experience and terrain familiarity to outwit the East African nation.

Algeria began the game the brighter side controlling proceedings and have large spells of possession.

Their breakthrough, however, came in the 34 minute from the penalty spot when Youcef Atal was brought down in the box following a mazy overlapping run into the box. Baghdad Bounedjah stepped up and made no mistake sending the keeper in the wrong direction.

Ghana Black Queens secured a narrow win against Algeria in the opening game of the African Womens Cup of Nations 2018.

The game started with Ghana pressing and pushing forward, Samira almost scored in the 9th minute but saw her strike stopped by the Algerian goalie who palmed the ball to give Ghana Black Queens a corner.

Amfobea Gladys scored the first goal for Ghana in the 12th minute.

Algeria later played with more possession of the ball but still found it difficult to break the Ghanaian defence and they settled for long range shots.

Ghana had a chance to score in the 28 minute when Faustina Ampah’s header went off target after connecting with Juliet Acheampong’s cross. Ghana went to into the dressing room at half time with a one goal lead against Algeria.

Both teams squandered a lot of chances in the second half; Ghana had the opportunity to add to their lead in the 69th minute but Algerian goalie, Kahina was equal to the task.

Ghana Black Queens scored a goal through Jane Ayiyiem in the 70th minute but it was ruled offside by the officials.

Grace Asantewaa almost doubled the lead in injury time but narrowly missed the opportunity before the referee ended the game.
